Beginning the Journey

Randall Lim began learning Wushu in September 2022 when he was in Primary 1. He joined Martial House in July 2023, taking an important step in a journey that would soon become a major part of his life.

When he first started, Randall knew little about competitions or where Wushu might take him. He simply enjoyed attending training, learning new movements and routines, and challenging himself to improve.

With the support of his parents, he began attending more training sessions. The more he trained, the more he discovered how much there was to learn.

Falling in Love with Wushu

As Randall spent more time training, Wushu became something he looked forward to after school. What began as a new activity gradually developed into a genuine passion.

He particularly enjoys practising jumps. For Randall, successfully performing a difficult movement after repeating it many times brings a strong sense of satisfaction.

Seeing his own improvement motivates him to return to training, learn new skills and continue challenging himself. Through this process of learning and discovery, Randall slowly fell in love with Wushu.

Growing with Martial House

Apart from school and home, Martial House is where Randall spends much of his time. It has become his home ground and an important part of his development as a Wushu athlete.

At Martial House, he has spent countless hours learning, training and improving alongside his coaches and teammates. The academy has also given him many opportunities to perform before an audience.

Randall enjoys the excitement and adrenaline that follow each performance. When spectators approach him to offer encouragement or praise his performance, he feels a deep sense of satisfaction.

These moments have made him feel that the Martial House community is cheering for him and supporting him throughout his journey.

Embracing a New Direction

One of the most significant moments in Randall’s journey came in 2025, when he made the difficult decision to move from Changquan to Nanquan.

The change initially left him feeling uncertain. However, his coaches encouraged him to see the transition as a new opportunity. They reminded him that a committed athlete can adapt, continue learning and give his best regardless of the event he practises.

With their support and guidance, Randall embraced the change, continued training and refused to give up. The experience taught him that progress sometimes requires the courage to take a different path.

A World Stage Milestone

Randall’s perseverance led to one of his proudest moments at the 10th World Junior Wushu Championships in Tianjin, China.

Competing internationally for Singapore for the first time, Randall won two silver medals in the Boys’ Group C Nanquan and Nangun events.

Standing on the podium after all the hours of training filled him with happiness and pride. It allowed him to recognise how far he had progressed since taking his first Wushu lesson just a few years earlier.

The achievement was particularly meaningful because it followed his transition to Nanquan. It showed Randall what could be accomplished by remaining open to change, listening to his coaches and continuing to work hard.

Learning Beyond Home

One of Randall’s most memorable experiences with Martial House was travelling to Seremban with the team.

During the trip, he reunited with Malaysian athletes whom he had met two years earlier. He was delighted that some of them still remembered him and enjoyed having the opportunity to train with them again.

Randall also trained with different coaches and experienced another approach to Wushu training. This allowed him to learn new things and broaden his understanding of the sport.

What made the trip especially meaningful was being able to share it with his Martial House teammates. Together, they strengthened friendships, learned from others and created new memories beyond their usual training environment.

Looking Ahead

Randall hopes to continue improving as a Wushu athlete and represent Singapore at more international competitions. He also wants to do well in his studies while continuing to challenge himself in the sport.

In the future, Randall hopes to become a Wushu coach. He wants to experience Wushu not only as an athlete who learns and trains, but also as someone who can teach, guide and inspire others.

He hopes that he can eventually pass on what he has learned, help younger athletes improve and encourage them in the same way his coaches have inspired him.

For now, Randall understands that he still has much to learn. He believes that becoming a good student is the first step towards becoming a good coach.

Persevering Through Every Challenge

To Randall, Martial House is his home ground. He still remembers how excited he was to attend training every evening and weekend when he first joined.

Over time, Martial House became a place filled with meaningful experiences, supportive relationships and happy memories. Randall is grateful to the coaches who have guided and supported him throughout his journey.

Wushu and Martial House have also helped Randall grow beyond the sport. Travelling for overseas competitions showed him that he was more independent than he had previously realised.

Training taught him to remain disciplined and continue trying when he feels tired or when things do not go according to plan. Most importantly, he has learned to face difficult situations with confidence and remind himself that he is capable of overcoming them.

Randall’s transition from Changquan to Nanquan taught him that an unexpected change can lead to a new opportunity. His message to younger athletes is to persevere when they encounter obstacles and remain willing to take chances.
